Lancaster Castle

Kendal Alex and I, following our wonderful adventures to the land of Devon in February of 2017, decided to plan another adventure, this time to Kendal, in the Lake District. My flight had been booked for the weekend before our week in Kendal. I had my bags packed and was looking forward to having a nice week off, exploring a new place and getting a chance to just relax. 1. Just one of the beautiful views of Kendal. On the morning of our journey up to Kendal, I headed over to Alex’s with my suitcase. The weather was, once again, simply stunning. There was a light breeze which aimlessly carried the enticing aroma of freshly mown grass and the heat of the summer. The skies were blue, and we were just looking forward to arriving in Kendal. We had picked up a few drinks and snacks for the journey, jumped in the car and headed off. The roads were quite clear, considering how wonderful the weather was. After travelling for a few hours, we ended up arriving in Kendal. My phone had been a helpf...

Rochester Castle

Image
August 2017 was a very memorable summer for us as we had accomplished a vast number of new goals – visit a different country, climb a mountain, get promotions at work and stay in a relatively secluded log cabin right on the shores of Loch Ness in Scotland. The final week of our holidays was spent in Kent, as mentioned in previous posts. After arriving in Kent, getting to know the area better and visiting some castles and other historic places, we decided to visit Rochester Castle. Alex, Vera and I had enjoyed some great sights and moments throughout our week. Vera and I live and work in Russia, so getting to return home and experience some of the day-to-day life of England was a welcome treat for us, especially as it is what I grew up with and gives me a nice sense of nostalgia. Kent had certainly lived up to our expectations and was a great way to cap off our great holiday in the UK. 1. A standard car park in a not-so-standard location. The sunlight was shining aimlessly through the s...

Leeds Castle

Kent Kent had been an interesting experience and had been full of amazing trips to castles, dining at local restaurants and cooking at home. We had had a mix of days where the weather had been exceptional and we had spent the entire day outside, going to cafes, picking up some shopping, doing some Pokémon Go and learning more about the area, then there were other days where the weather had been abysmal. Those abysmal days were nice in the sense that we had a lot of time to have some great discussions, relax on the comfortable couch, eat some snacks, watch some TV shows and movies and watch the dark, grey world pass us by through the huge windows.   The evenings were nice as we often would go for a walk to try and see some stars and enjoy the evening air. On one of these evenings we decided that, come rain or shine, we would head over to Leeds Castle the following day.   Leeds Castle Our day started with the incredible sound of singing birds wafting in through our windows as we...

Kent and Upnor Castle

Kent   In the summer of 2017, we decided to travel to somewhere a bit closer to home – Maidstone, Kent. My wife and I travelled over to my friend Alex’s house, ready for our week-long trip to Kent to explore somewhere close but new to us. The weather was stunning; small, white clouds filled the almost luminous blue skies as the sun’s powerful rays burst through the atmosphere. It was a very warm day with little wind. The leaves on the trees were fluttering ever so slightly in the wind, with their darkened green leaves somehow capturing the light of the sun as they twisted and turned, creating an almost mesmerising pattern of light and dark throughout the trees. 1. The weather when we left Hainault. It looked like a Windows desktop background We stayed in a quieter area with a wide variety of great restaurants close by, serving a huge variety of cuisine. One of our culinary highlights was a dine-in Indian restaurant which served authentic cuisine (although the chefs made the food a ...

Lydford Castle

The small town of Lydford, located on the north-western edge of the ancient Dartmoor National Park in Devon, is home to an array of interesting historical sites that are incredibly interesting to visit.   It was a cold, misty February morning in 2017 when my friend and I decided to visit Lydford castle. We had travelled down from London a few days earlier to enjoy the scenery and see more of the country. Being from the capital, it wasn’t very often that we were able to get out into the countryside, so we were exceptionally excited about it. As we approached our hotel in Okehampton, we passed through a wooded area. A fog had descended throughout the forest and the scene that lay before us was very reminiscent of Silent Hill. However, the area was calm, quiet, incredibly pleasant and, unsurprisingly, zombie-free.   1. Lydford Castle's exterior On the morning that we visited Lydford castle, it was a cold, rainy and surprisingly dark day. The thick clouds that filled the sky dimme...
